Details: The Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) is a small, friendly railway where the train ride is just part of the experience. Your journey on board our heritage train starts at Porthmadog (WHR) station for a short trip through the Snowdonia countryside.

On the return journey, the train stops at the engine sheds, where there's chance to climb on the engines and find out for yourself how things work. On certain days, have a ride on our new miniature railway. The train ride and shed tour take just under an hour.

The Train Ride
Ride in our vintage coaches, some of which are over 100 years old. See where the Prime Minister sat when he visited the railway in 1892. The train starts at Porthmadog (WHR) station, and trundles through the meadows of Snowdonia to Traeth Mawr. Look out for views of the mountains and the towering bulk of the old sea cliffs. The train also stops at Pen-y-Mount, where you can leave the train here and explore the network of footpaths through the surrounding countryside.

When do trains run?
There's a regular service each day until 2nd November. Have a look at the timetable for more details. Steam trains run during most of the school holidays, with heritage diesel engines at other times.

We've also organised a number of special events during the year, including a whole summer of steam trains in Porthmadog.

Ticket Fares
Tickets are valid all day, so you can have another ride for free! For a small extra charge, adults can ride in the cab of the engine.

Adult £5.50, Child £3.00, Concession£4.50
Family ticket £15.00

A complete visit takes around 45 minutes, including short train ride and extended stop at the engine sheds. Tickets are valid all day, so you can have as many extra rides as you wish for free!

How to find us
Porthmadog (WHR) station is at the top of the High Street, close to the mainline railway station. There's plenty of level car parking nearby. Have a look at the map for more details.

Most of the site is level, and there's a wheelchair accessible carriage on every train.
