Local Attractions

This southern part of Snowdonia may be less well known than the north but we like that way. The mountains here still offer a wealth of stunning opportunities. Arguably a day in these mountains is more satisfying due to the fact that they are more undiscovered and include the magnificent Cader Idris, at 2,927ft one of the highest peaks in Snowdonia with wondrous views to Snowdon in the north and Cardigan Bay and some say, even to Ireland in the west.

Less strenuous but equally beautiful walks include Precipice Walk, Torrent Walk and Panorama Walk and of course the gem of the region, The Maddach Estuary as seen on the BBC’s Julia Bradburys Walks and Coast programmes are just a taste of what awaits you.

Traditional attractions such as climbing, walking, riding, cycling, beeches, fishing, steam railways and craft centres are all accessible from the cottage. But the more adventurous activities have certainly gained a firm foothold in this area. As well as white water rafting, canoeing and kayaking (Lake Bala –The National White Water Centre) and mountaineering, there are numerous challenging mountain biking trails in the area including the Coed Y Brenin Mountain Forest Bike Centre providing 9,000-acre of Mountain Forest Park.  The Park offers some of the finest mountain biking in the UK, with way-marked trails, bike hire and visitor centre, plus spectacular walks past rivers, gorges and waterfalls for those not biking. the national Cycle Routes 8,81,82, and 818 are all within easy reach. For the less atheltic the cycle trail alon the The maddach Estuary is flat and takes you past The George III,  well worth a stop (each way) for drinks and food as well as the view!

Award winning Blue Flag beaches surround the area with their clean bathing and golden sands. Fairbourne with its magnificent gentle shelving 2-mile beach, Tywyn, Aberdfyi and Barmouth offer hours of beach fun for all ages. Shell Island - north of Barmouth, is a wonderful mix of beech and dunes.

The local lakes at Creggenan nestled under Cader Idris are possibly one of the best kept secrets of Snowdonia, followed by the Lakes Tal-y-Llyn, Bala and Llyn Vyrnwy, are all must see destinations
Min Y Dwr is well placed for all the holiday attractions of the Snowdonia National Park, Snowdon itself, Snowdon Mountain Railway, Capel Curig, Beddgelert and Betws Coed.

A short distance away the market town of Dolgellau is steeped in Welsh history with its pretty shops and good restaurants and the town really comes alive in mid July during the Sesiwn Fawr, when a series of bands and musical activities take place in pubs and open-air stages.

As a contrast why not visit the outstanding 'Italianate' oddity of Portmerion at Portmadog (location for the cult series The Prisoner) are all within easy reach from Min Y Dwr.

A visit to ‘The George III’ Pub at Penmaenpool nestled in The Mawddach in the late afternoon setting sun is a must. Walk or cycle the (flat) Maddach Trail and cross the Barmouth Rail and Foot Bridge to sample the charm of Barmouth.

King Arthur’s Labyrinth in Corris, an underground boat takes visitors into the spectacular caverns.
