Betws Y Coed
Tan y Bwlch
Vale of Ffestiniog
North Wales for Walkers and Climbers
If it’s the big fella you’re looking to climb, then Snowdon can be climbed directly from Llanberis, Beddgelert and Rhyd Ddu. If it’s the Glyders, Tryfan or Moel Siabod then Capel Curig and Betws Y Coed also make great bases with a superb choice of pubs serving excellent locally sourced Welsh produce. For the Carneddau, any northern coastal town is ideal, including scenic Conwy, Penmaenmawr or the bustling historic town of Caernarfon. If it’s Cnict or the Moelwyns that’s on your tick list, you can’t beat Porthmadog or the Vale of Ffestiniog for a real taste of North Wales or alternatively if it’s the remoteness of The Rhinogs, then consider Harlech, Llanbedr or perhaps Trawsfynydd too. Southern Snowdonia is quieter walking country but doesn’t lack for big mountains with Cader Idris a huge favourite for many. Barmouth and Dolgellau are great bases if you wish to climb this iconic peak.
Snowdonia and the nearby Lleyn Peninsula are blessed with superb beaches making North Wales a great place for a family holiday on the coast. The pretty harbour village of Aberdovey has long been a popular holiday destination in Wales, as has Barmouth on the other side of the estuary - both sporting fabulous soft sandy beaches and fun for all the family. The wide sandybeaches further up the coast at Tal y Bont, Dyffryn Ardudwy and Harlech make for a great spot to kick the ball around with the kids or simply relax and enjoy a little peace and quiet and enjoy the views across the bay. More great beaches can be found on nearby Llyn Peninsula, including a number of super family beaches near Porthmadog and Criccieth and all along the cost to Abersoch. A few miles further don’t miss Aberdaron for a bit of kite flying or windsurfing or further around on the northern coastline, the beach at Porth Oer (Whistling Sands) is a unique treat for the kids with soft golden sands that ‘squeak’ with every step.
